How to Choose the Right Clothes for Yoga?
Choosing the right clothes is as important as choosing the right type of yoga for you. To enjoy the yoga practice you need clothes that you’ll literally forget about and that will enable you to relax and to only focus on your postures and your breathing. So what to wear for yoga? Let’s have a look at some basic rules to follow when choosing the right clothes.
Rule nr. 1 Comfort
This might sound obvious but I can’t emphasize it enough. If you want to keep up with the latest yoga fashion trends, feel free to do so. Nowadays, there is a wide selection of yoga clothes for both men and women and you don’t necessarily need to trade comfort for style. However, your yoga clothing should always provide freedom of movement and allow you to stretch without any restrictions.
Rule nr.2 Fit
You don’t want your clothes to be too baggy or loose since the excessive fabric might get in the way of yoga poses. But always make sure the clothes you are buying fit perfectly. Your workout wear should basically hug your body shape and feel like your second skin.
Rule nr. 3 Material
Especially during hot yoga or bikram yoga things can get sweaty. And there’s nothing worse than wearing clothes that hold sweat (e.g. made out of cotton) and feel heavy and uncomfortable after the first 15 minutes of the yoga class. Most of the fitness clothing nowadays is made from materials that wick moisture away and leave the skin feeling dry. Making sure the material doesn’t irritate your skin is as important as the fact that it doesn’t hold sweat.
Rule nr. 4 No seams or fastenings
So many yoga poses are done laying down so imagine laying down on a fastening. That sounds quite uncomfortable, doesn’t it? Choose a good sports bra which will provide enough support but that will not cut in anywhere. The same goes for yoga tops, pants or leggings. Just follow the simple rule: the fewer seams (or no seams at all), the more comfortable yoga wear.
Rule nr. 5 Layering
Keeping the body temperature maintained during the warm up and cool down exercises is important. Especially early morning yoga can get chilly, so to avoid the cold, layer the clothes. Take a zip-up sweatshirt with you and trust me, it will be as handy as your yoga mat.
So these are my tips and rules that I follow to buy workout clothes that will not get in the way of my yoga practice. What is the most important thing for you when it comes to choosing your new yoga wear? Do you have any tips that I haven’t mentioned? I’m curious to hear your suggestions, let me know in the comments!
